Recently, a young nurse was performing a venipuncture for a 3-year-old child, who kept crying and uncooperative. After the first failed puncture, the nurse prepared to try again. Suddenly, the mother of this child who was waiting outside rushed into the treatment room and hit the nurse's forehead with an iPad, causing a wound up to 2 cm deep. When we read this news, we can still feel the tension between nervous nurse, anxious child and angry parents. Although the intravenous infusion has already become a common procedure, venipuncture for children may cause problem even for the experienced nurses. Why the children’s venipuncture can be so difficult? Is there a way to ease this problem?

Particularity of venipuncture for child

Blood samples and intravenous injection are frequently required in the pediatric clinic. However, children’s vessels are usually small, narrowing, and deeply-located, it’s difficult to see with naked eyes. Some conditions might exacerbate venipuncture’s difficulties, such as increased subcutaneous tissues in newborn, poor venous asset in patient requiring frequent venous cannulation because of chronic disease, dark skin color, malnourishment, and obesity.
Moreover, children could not well control himself and may get frightened easily. The crying babies who keep moving increase the difficulty of puncture. Even experts may fail the first-attempt. However, repeated punctures add undoubtedly children’s pain, which makes their parents more worried. During the actual clinical operation, we’ll suggest their parents to walk away if we need multiple punctures. In that case, the pressure of nurse may arise. All of these make the injection intravenous especially difficult.

Function of Vein Light during the clinic application

In March 2015, a hospital of Guangxi province introduced the vein viewer who can project a map of vein on the surface of skin. To observe the clinical application and effect of the vascular imaging device in pediatric venipuncture, they passed a set of controlled trials. The experiment selected 80 children in the children's infusion room, the control group includes 40 cases who accepted the puncture intravenous with the help of vein illuminator, and the other children use the traditional methods as experimental group. In order to ensure that the experiment is not interfered by other factors, all the venipunctures are performed on the head or the back of hands and feet of children by the experienced nurses. When the needle goes under the skin, they considered as one puncture. By recording and comparing the number of punctures, they observed the puncture efficiency of two groups.

The average number of punctures in the control group was less than 1.2, and the experimental group was nearly 1.6, first puncture success rate for the control group was up to 90% while the experimental group is less than 40%. Therefore, compared with traditional puncture methods, the venipuncture in assist of vein finder improved greatly the first puncture success rate and injection efficiency. The family satisfaction rises naturally. In additional, the vein detector can not only evaluate the blood vessels including position and patency of vein, filling degree of blood, etc. before puncture, but also observe the flow direction of blood and liquid medicine after puncture, preventing liquid medicine reflux or hematoma. Therefore, the vein viewer light playes an important role during the injection intravenous.

Excellent VeinSight™ vein finder of BLZ Tech

VeinSight™ vein finder projects harmless near-infrared light (NIR), hemoglobin (oxygen-carrying protein) within the patient’s blood absorbs more light, while the surrounding tissue reflects. The device is capable to capture this difference of absorbance, and to project the vein image on the surface of skin. Without any contact with patients, the vein finder can avoid the risk of cross contamination.

The product of BLZ Tech has many features to make the injection easier. First of all, all three models process different sizes for the image projected, when we do the venipuncture on the head of children, near his eyes, we can choose a small size to avoid shooting directly the child's eyes, which will cause unnecessary panic.

Then, during the operation, children may struggle due to fear, and it's difficult for the vein viewer to locate the position of the blood vessel and show it on the skin. To solve this problem, we equip three supports to our vein finder: stand support, fixed support and table support, which are capable to free the hands of nurses. They can use the vein illuminator to mark on the skin the suitable position for the puncture.

Moreover, the clear visualization indicates that the blood vessels are superficial, and the blurry visualization indicates that the blood vessels are deep. VS400 and VS500 are now equipped with a depth mode, which can show the depth information of veins more clearly and intuitively through the depth prompt grid. It's helpful for the nurses to choose the angle of needle.

VeinSight™ vein finder of BLZ Tech assists the medical persons to do children’s venipuncture, with higher first-attempt success rate and injection efficiency, children’s pain may be reduced and satisfaction of their parents may increase. In that case, there will be fewer medical disputes and a better reputation for the hospital.
